Books That Influenced Me
by Eric Laster

Just to be clear: books that have influenced me do not necessarily equal my favorite books. I don’t like choosing favorites, because…I just don’t. What follows are books/stories that at one time or another have made big impressions on me when I read (and reread) them. It strikes me as unrealistically rigid to believe that they must always mean as much to me as they did when I first became acquainted with them. I do not, and probably never will, have the same reaction to a given book or story that I read at different points in my life. A novel that I find impactful now might offer me little in ten years’ time, and after still another decade, I might find it rather unimpressive. This probably all goes without saying; I tend to say such things anyway.

Now that that’s out of the way…

What follows isn’t an exhaustive, hierarchical list:

The work of Dr. Seuss. The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales by John Scieszka and Lane Smith. The Outsiders and That Was Then, This Is Now, by S.E. Hinton. Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. The work of Philip K Dick. The Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey. Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne. “Sonny ’s Blues” by James Baldwin (a story of two brothers). The Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Grendel by John Gardner. Lord of the Flies by William Golding. “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the work of Kafka, Borges, and Faulkner. And many, many more.

When Curtis Brooks starts receiving phone calls from his older brother Wilt, who’s been dead a week, he’s sure it’s to help him find evidence that will lead to a murderer’s arrest. But Wilt claims he wasn’t murdered; his calling, meant to help him adjust, is standard protocol for newly deceased at the Aftermart—a kind of inescapable, ever-expanding Walmart filled with discontinued products.

Wilt’s death ruled a homicide, Curtis embarks on a dangerous plan to find the killer, which soon has him scheming against a billionaire and floundering toward love with his brother’s ex-girlfriend Suzy, all while struggling through high school and his single mom’s poor choices.

Why does Wilt help Curtis win over Suzy, even as he organizes a rebellion at the Aftermart? Who’d wanted him dead? Curtis risks his life to answer these questions, in the process forging a bond with his brother unlike any they’ve ever had.

A New Yorker by birth, Eric Laster lives in Los Angeles. After a successful stint as a best-selling ghostwriter, Eric re-launched under his own name with the middle-grade novel Welfy Q. Deederhoth: Meat Purveyor, World Savior.  Whenever he’s not scribing, he records punk rock and presses it to vinyl.
